How Long Does It Take to Pay Off Student Loans?
A student loan is usually the longest debt people carry before a mortgage. Seeing the months left, and what extra payments do, turns a vague burden into a date.
The numbers behind the example
New federal Direct loans for undergraduates carry a fixed 6.52% rate for 2026–27 (first disbursed 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). The Education Data Initiative puts the average federal student loan balance at $40,467 per borrower. Older loans have their own fixed rates, so use yours.

$40,467 at 6.52%, by monthly payment
- $300 a month: about 244 months (20 years 4 months), about $32,600 of interest.
- $460 a month: about 10 years, the standard repayment term, about $14,700 of interest.
- $600 a month: about 85 months (7 years 1 month), about $10,100 of interest.
- $800 a month: about 5 years, about $7,000 of interest.
The first month builds about $220 of interest on this balance, so payments not far above that barely move it.
Plans and forgiveness
Federal loans offer standard, graduated, extended and income-driven plans, and some public-service jobs qualify for forgiveness. Those rules change and depend on your loans, so check your servicer or studentaid.gov. The calculator here assumes one fixed rate and the same payment each month.
Extra payments, then the next goal
- Raises: sending half of each raise to the loan shortens it without changing how you live.
- Target the highest rate: if you have several loans, the avalanche method saves the most.
- After the last payment: invest the same amount and start the countdown to financial independence.
Chris owes $40,000 at 6.5% and is on the 10-year plan at about $460 a month. Adding $140 a month cuts nearly three years and about $4,600 of interest. When the loan ends, the $600 goes into investing.
