How Long Will It Take to Pay Off Your Credit Card?
Credit card interest is the most expensive money most people borrow. A payoff countdown shows how many months your balance has left, and how much faster a bigger payment gets there.
The numbers behind the example
The Federal Reserve reports an average APR of 22.36% on credit card accounts that were charged interest (August 2026). TransUnion puts the average card balance at $6,610 per borrower (Q2 2026). The calculator starts with those two numbers; change them to yours.

$6,610 at 22.36%, by monthly payment
- $150 a month: about 94 months (7 years 10 months), about $7,370 of interest.
- $200 a month: about 52 months, about $3,750 of interest.
- $300 a month: about 29 months, about $1,980 of interest.
- $500 a month: about 16 months, about $1,050 of interest.
Going from $150 to $200 a month nearly halves the time. At the low end, most of each payment is interest; a bit more goes almost entirely to the balance.
Why the minimum payment takes so long
Many cards set the minimum at about 1% of the balance plus that month's interest. As the balance falls, so does the minimum, so the debt shrinks more slowly every month. On the example balance, paying only a minimum like that would take more than 18 years and cost more in interest than the original balance. Your statement shows your card's own estimate.
Speeding it up
- Pay a fixed amount, not the minimum: a steady payment beats one that shrinks.
- Stop adding to it: new spending resets the countdown.
- Look at the rate: a lower rate or 0% transfer offer can help if fees and terms make sense.
Rosa has $6,600 on a card at 22% and has been paying about $150. Seeing nearly eight years, she raises it to $300 and cuts the time to about two and a half years. When it is gone, she keeps sending the $300 to her investments, and her freedom day moves closer.
Questions people ask
How long does it take to pay off a credit card?
It depends on the balance, rate and payment. $6,610 at 22.36% takes about 52 months at $200 a month and about 29 months at $300.
What is the average credit card interest rate?
22.36% on accounts charged interest in August 2026, according to the Federal Reserve G.19 release (published 7 October 2026).
Why does paying the minimum take so long?
Because the minimum falls as the balance falls, much of each payment goes to interest. A fixed payment above the minimum ends the debt far sooner.
