Train WiFi · Canada
Is VIA Rail WiFi safe?
Free WiFi on most VIA Rail trains, in Business lounges and in some stations. VIA is unusually direct about security; here is what it says.
Usable with care. Join “VIA_WiFi_VIDEO” on the train or “via_station” in stations. VIA itself advises: stay alert, don’t give personal information to an unknown site, and “if possible, use a VPN”. Keep to HTTPS and check the network before banking.

What the sign-in page should ask for
VIA’s sign-in is simply accepting the Terms & Conditions. A VIA portal that asks for a card number, a password or an app download does not match VIA’s description. VIA’s own advice applies: don’t give personal information to an unknown site.
Rule of thumb for any public WiFi: a sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, register an email or watch an ad. It should never ask for a card number for free access, your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
VIA publishes VIA_WiFi_VIDEO and via_station. VIA Free WiFi, VIARail_Guest or VIA-WiFi are not the published names.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) broadcast a trusted-looking name, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it.
A 5-step check at VIA Rail
- Join exactly
VIA_WiFi_VIDEOorvia_station, not a similar name. - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address before typing anything.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network when you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
Frequently asked questions
Is VIA Rail WiFi secure?
It is public WiFi. VIA itself advises staying alert, not giving personal information to unknown sites and, if possible, using a VPN. Most VPNs work, though VIA cannot guarantee it.
What is the VIA Rail WiFi network called?
“VIA_WiFi_VIDEO” on board and “via_station” in stations, according to VIA’s how-to-connect page.
Why is VIA Rail WiFi slow?
VIA says its on-board Wi‑Fi is based on a cellular connection, so speed depends on mobile coverage along the route.
