Is Avanti West Coast WiFi safe?

Free WiFi on Avanti trains and in its stations, with an email sign-in. Here is what Avanti publishes, including its own security advice.

Short answer

Fine for browsing if you join “Avanti_Free_WIFI” and use HTTPS. Avanti’s own terms say the service runs over a public Wi‑Fi network that “has inherent security risks”, and it recommends the same precautions as any public WiFi. Check the network before banking, or use mobile data.

What the sign-in page should ask for

Avanti asks you to register with an email address. That is normal here, but it is also exactly what a copycat page would ask for, so only register after joining the official network, and don’t reuse a password from another account if one is requested.

Rule of thumb for any public WiFi: a sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, register an email or watch an ad. It should never ask for a card number for free access, your email password or a bank login.

Lookalike networks

Avanti publishes Avanti_Free_WIFI. A network such as Avanti WiFi, Avanti_Guest or Free Train WiFi is not the published name; on a crowded train, ask the crew if you see two similar names.

Copycat networks (“evil twins”) broadcast a trusted-looking name, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it.

A 5-step check at Avanti West Coast

  1. Join exactly Avanti_Free_WIFI, not a similar name.
  2. Complete the sign-in page and look at its address before typing anything.
  3. Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
  4. Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data.
  5. Turn off Auto-Join for this network when you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.

Frequently asked questions

Does Avanti West Coast have WiFi?

Yes. Avanti says Wi‑Fi is free to everyone in all its stations and on its trains. Select Avanti_Free_WIFI and register with an email address.

Why is Avanti WiFi not working?

Avanti lists interruptions in tunnels and cuttings, controls per-device download speed and blocks a limited number of websites. If the sign-in page never appears, see our captive portal guide.

Is Avanti WiFi safe for banking?

Banking apps encrypt their own traffic. Avanti itself says its public Wi‑Fi has inherent security risks, so join the exact network name, never enter card details on the sign-in page, and use mobile data if you are unsure.
