Is LNER WiFi safe?

Free WiFi on LNER trains with an email-and-password sign-in. Knowing the real sign-in address is the easiest way to spot a fake.

Short answer

Reasonable for browsing. Join “LNER WIFI” and check the sign-in page is at wifi.lner.co.uk (or lner.on.icomera.com on older trains), which LNER publishes. LNER’s WiFi is Friendly WiFi certified, a content filter rather than encryption, so keep to HTTPS and check before banking.

What the sign-in page should ask for

LNER’s sign-in uses an email address and password. Check the address bar first: LNER publishes wifi.lner.co.uk (and lner.on.icomera.com on non-Azuma trains). A login page on any other address that asks for your password is a red flag. Use a password you don’t use elsewhere.

Rule of thumb for any public WiFi: a sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, register an email or watch an ad. It should never ask for a card number for free access, your email password or a bank login.

Lookalike networks

LNER publishes LNER WIFI. LNER Free WiFi, LNER_Guest or Azuma WiFi are not on LNER’s page.

Copycat networks (“evil twins”) broadcast a trusted-looking name, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it.

A 5-step check at LNER

  1. Join exactly LNER WIFI, not a similar name.
  2. Complete the sign-in page and look at its address before typing anything.
  3. Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
  4. Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data.
  5. Turn off Auto-Join for this network when you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
