Is Optimum WiFi safe?
Optimum runs over a million WiFi hotspots, mostly in the New York area. It broadcasts two networks with very different security, and picking the right one is most of the answer.
Choose “optimum” when you can. Optimum describes it as a secure public network where all data travels over encrypted WiFi, joined with your Optimum ID and password. “optimumwifi” is an open network with a sign-in page, so treat it like any public WiFi: HTTPS apps only, and mobile data for banking.
What Optimum publishes about its WiFi
| Network names | “optimum” (secure) and “optimumwifi” (open, with a sign-in page). If you don’t see either, you are not in an Optimum hotspot Source: Optimum |

What the sign-in page should ask for
On “optimum” your phone asks for your Optimum ID and password in the WiFi settings and then shows a certificate to trust; check that it belongs to the domain Optimum names (aaa.optimumwifi.com) before you accept. On “optimumwifi” a web sign-in page appears; your Optimum ID belongs only on an optimum.net address. A page asking for a card number outside the official day-pass purchase doesn’t match.
Rule of thumb for any public WiFi: a sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, register an email or watch an ad. It should never ask for a card number for free access, your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
Optimum publishes exactly optimum and optimumwifi. Optimum Free WiFi, optimum-guest or OptimumWiFi_Free are not Optimum’s names. An open network can be copied by anyone, which is another reason to prefer the encrypted “optimum”.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) broadcast a trusted-looking name, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it.
A 5-step check at Optimum
- Join exactly
optimumoroptimumwifi, not a similar name. - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address before typing anything.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network when you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
