Is AT&T WiFi safe?
AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots appear as “attwifi” in coffee shops, airports and restaurants across the US, and many AT&T phones join them automatically.
“attwifi” is AT&T’s public hotspot network. Most AT&T devices connect automatically, and AT&T says the usage doesn’t count against your plan data. It is public WiFi, so treat it that way: check the name is exactly attwifi, use HTTPS apps, and keep banking for mobile data or a VPN.

What the sign-in page should ask for
AT&T phones usually join without a sign-in page. If you are prompted, AT&T asks for your AT&T ID — so a lookalike page asking for exactly that would look convincing. Only enter it after confirming the network is attwifi and the page address belongs to att.com.
Rule of thumb for any public WiFi: a sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, register an email or watch an ad. It should never ask for a card number for free access, your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
AT&T publishes attwifi (and att-wifi on some tablets and laptops). ATT Free WiFi, AT&T-Guest or attwifi_free are not names AT&T lists.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) broadcast a trusted-looking name, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it.
A 5-step check at AT&T
- Join exactly
attwifioratt-wifi, not a similar name. - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address before typing anything.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network when you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
