Is Amtrak WiFi safe?
Amtrak offers free WiFi on many trains and some stations — but VPNs only work on a few routes, which matters if you work on board.
Fine for browsing over HTTPS, but know the limits: per Amtrak, VPNs are supported only on Acela, Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner and Gold Runner trains, and streaming isn’t supported. On other trains, keep sensitive work for mobile data or a checked network.

Amtrak’s WiFi page doesn’t list a network name. If you see more than one train-sounding network, ask the conductor or check onboard signage.
Working on the train
- Check whether your train supports VPN (list above) before you plan to work on board.
- Join the train’s network and run a quick check before logging in to work accounts.
- No VPN on your train? Use mobile data for work logins and keep WiFi for browsing.
- Download big files before you leave — Amtrak recommends this too.
- Turn off Auto-Join for the train network after your trip.
