Is Zurich Airport WiFi safe?
What the Zurich Airport (ZRH) WiFi is called, how the SMS and boarding-pass logins work, what extra time costs, and how to check it before you trust it.
Zurich’s network is simply “Zurich Airport”. You get eight free hours after registering by SMS or with a code from a WiFi Station, and you can buy more by card. Buy extra time only on the airport’s own sign-in page, never on a page from a network with a different name.

What the sign-in page should ask for
There are two ways in. By text message: select “Register by SMS”, enter your mobile number and type in the code you receive. Without a phone number: select “Register by boarding pass”, get a code at a WiFi Station or information desk, enter it and accept the terms.
Some sites open without registration on the airport network, including Zurich Airport, SBB, SWISS and the ETA Canada, ESTA and EVUS sites. That is a feature of the portal, not a sign of trouble.
Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number (unless you chose a paid tier on the official portal), your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
The official name is just Zurich Airport, with a space. An older setup used ZurichAirport, and you may also see Zurich Airport Free WiFi or ZRH Free WiFi. Because the real network sells extra time by card, a lookalike that shows a payment page is the main risk here.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.
Good to know in Zurich
- WiFi Stations are listed landside (Check-in 1–3, Arrival 1 and 2, Parking 2) and airside (Gates A, B, D and E, the Airside Center and both baggage claim halls).
- If you pay for more time, check the address bar on the payment page: it should be the airport’s portal over HTTPS. Better still, use mobile data for the payment and the airport WiFi afterwards.
- Airline lounges are members only and have their own access.
A 5-step check at ZRH
- Join exactly
Zurich Airportand register by SMS or boarding-pass code — not a similar name that offers “instant” access. - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
