Is Istanbul Airport WiFi safe?

What the Istanbul Airport (IST) WiFi is called, what its sign-in page asks for, and how to check it before you trust it.

Short answer

“iGA WiFi” is free and official, but sign-in uses your phone number and an SMS code (or a passport/ID-scan code from a kiosk). Join only the exact official name before entering your number, use HTTPS, and check the network before banking.

What the sign-in page should ask for

Istanbul Airport is one of the few hubs where the official sign-in asks for a phone number (SMS code) or a passport/ID scan at a kiosk. That is legitimate here — but it also means a copycat page asking for your number would look normal. Only enter your number after joining the exact official network, and never enter card details.

Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number, your email password or a bank login.

Lookalike networks

The official network is iGA WiFi (the page also writes it İGA WiFi). Istanbul Airport Free, IST-WiFi or Free_IGA are not the published name.

Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.

A 5-step check at Istanbul

  1. Join exactly iGA WiFi — not a similar name, and not one that appeared after you arrived at the gate.
  2. Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
  3. Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
  4. Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
  5. Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.

Frequently asked questions

How do I log in to Istanbul Airport WiFi?

Choose “Login with Mobile” on the iGA WiFi portal and enter your phone number, then the password sent by SMS. Or scan your passport or ID at a kiosk to get an access code and choose “Login with Access Code”.

Is it safe to give my phone number for Istanbul Airport WiFi?

It is the official sign-in method, so it is expected on the real network. The risk is giving it to a lookalike network, so confirm the name “iGA WiFi” first. A real portal never needs your card number or email password.

Is Istanbul Airport WiFi time-limited?

The official WiFi page describes it as unlimited and free. Rules can change; the portal shows the current terms.
