Is SFO Airport WiFi safe?
What the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) WiFi is called, what its sign-in page asks for, and how to check it before you trust it.
SFO’s own network, “#SFO FREE WIFI”, is free in all terminals and only asks you to accept the terms, so it is fine for everyday browsing if you pick that exact name. Treat it as public WiFi: use HTTPS, and be suspicious of any SFO sign-in page that asks for payment or passwords.

What the sign-in page should ask for
SFO describes a very light sign-in: join the network, open a browser and accept the terms. A page that asks for a password, a card number or an app download does not match what the airport publishes.
Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number, your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
The official name starts with a hash sign: #SFO FREE WIFI. SFO Free WiFi, SFO-Guest or Free SFO Airport WiFi are not the published name.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.
A 5-step check at SFO
- Join exactly
#SFO FREE WIFI— not a similar name, and not one that appeared after you arrived at the gate. - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
