Is JFK Airport WiFi safe?

What the John F. Kennedy International Airport WiFi is called, what its sign-in page asks for, and how to check it before you trust it.

Short answer

The official network, “_Free JFK WiFi”, is fine for everyday browsing if you join that exact name and stick to apps and sites that use HTTPS. It is a free, open hotspot, so treat it as public: avoid signing in to banking on a network you haven’t checked, and switch to mobile data if anything looks off.

What the sign-in page should ask for

The official page only says to select the network from your list; it does not describe the sign-in page. Expect a captive portal (a sign-in page) before the internet works.

Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number, your email password or a bank login.

Lookalike networks

The official name starts with an underscore: _Free JFK WiFi. A network called Free JFK WiFi, JFK Free WiFi or JFK-Guest is not the name the airport publishes. That does not prove it is fake, but it is not the one to pick.

Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.

A 5-step check at JFK

  1. Join exactly _Free JFK WiFi — not a similar name, and not one that appeared after you arrived at the gate.
  2. Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
  3. Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
  4. Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
  5. Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.

Frequently asked questions

What is the JFK WiFi called?

The Port Authority’s JFK page tells travelers to select “_Free JFK WiFi” (with a leading underscore) from the list of networks.

Is JFK WiFi safe for online banking?

Banking apps encrypt their own traffic, which is what protects you on any public network. The risks are joining a lookalike network or typing details into a fake sign-in page. Join the exact official name, never enter card details on the WiFi sign-in page, and run a quick check first if you want a second opinion.

Who do I call if JFK WiFi doesn’t work?

The official page lists +1 (800) 880-4117 for WiFi support, available 24/7. If the sign-in page doesn’t appear, see our captive portal guide.
