Is Hong Kong Airport WiFi safe?
What the Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) WiFi networks are called, how to get the sign-in page, and how to check them before you trust them.
Hong Kong airport publishes two networks, “#HKAirport Free WiFi” and “#HKAirport Hi-Speed WiFi”, free with no registration. You only click “Agree and Continue”. Pick one of those exact names, and treat it as public WiFi for banking.

What the sign-in page should ask for
The airport’s steps: select one of the two networks, open a browser, enter any valid website address that does not start with https://, read the terms and click “Agree and Continue”. Typing a plain address is what brings up the sign-in page.
No registration is needed, so a page on these networks that asks for an email, a password or a card is not the airport’s.
Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number (unless you chose a paid tier on the official portal), your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
Both official names start with a hash sign and “HKAirport” as one word. HK Airport Free WiFi, HKG Free WiFi or #HKAirport_Free are not the published names. The airport’s own fallback, Wi-Fi.HK via HKAirport, is part of the government-backed Wi-Fi.HK brand.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.
Good to know in Hong Kong
- The airport marks High Speed Wi-Fi zones on its map; “#HKAirport Hi-Speed WiFi” is the network to use there.
- If your device will not connect, the airport suggests switching Wi-Fi off and on again before trying another network.
A 5-step check at HKG
- Join exactly
#HKAirport Free WiFior#HKAirport Hi-Speed WiFi(or the airport’s fallbackWi-Fi.HK via HKAirport). - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
