Is Houston IAH Airport WiFi safe?
What the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) WiFi is called, how its splash page works, and how to check it before you trust it.
IAH’s official network is called “Free Airport WIFI”, free in every terminal and the parking garages. Sign-in is just agreeing to the terms. Because the name is so generic, be extra careful to join the airport’s network and not a copy with a stronger signal.

What the sign-in page should ask for
Houston Airports describes five steps: click the Wi-Fi icon, select “Free Airport WIFI”, wait for the airport’s splash page, agree to the terms and click “submit”. That is all it should ask for.
After you connect, the airport’s own site has a confirmation page at fly2houston.com/iah/wifi that says “You are now connected to Wi-Fi.” A page that asks for a card, a password or an app download does not match what the airport publishes.
Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number (unless you chose a paid tier on the official portal), your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
“Free Airport WIFI” has no airport code in it, so anyone can broadcast a name that looks the same, or nearly the same (Free Airport WiFi, Free_Airport_WIFI, IAH Free WiFi). Copycat networks (“evil twins”) rely on exactly this. If you see two versions, ask staff or call the help desk before you pick one.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.
Good to know at IAH
- The network reaches the parking garages, so you may join it before you enter the terminal. Check the name again once you are inside.
- The splash page should open on its own. If it does not, our captive portal guide covers the usual fixes; do not switch to a similar-looking network to get online faster.
A 5-step check at IAH
- Join exactly
Free Airport WIFI, and only if there is one network with that name. If two look alike, check with staff or the help desk. - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
