Is Haneda Airport WiFi safe?

What the Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) WiFi is called, what its sign-in page asks for, and how to check it before you trust it.

Short answer

“HANEDA-FREE-WIFI” is the airport’s official free network across Terminals 1–3. It’s fine for browsing if you join that exact name and use HTTPS. Like most free airport WiFi it has no password, so check it before banking and prefer mobile data for anything sensitive.

What the sign-in page should ask for

Haneda’s instructions are simply: select the network, open your web browser and follow the on-screen instructions. Note that the airport says the free WiFi is not usable in shops (lounges excepted), so a strong “Haneda” network inside a shop deserves a second look.

Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number, your email password or a bank login.

Lookalike networks

Haneda lists the network name (ESS-ID) HANEDA-FREE-WIFI. Haneda_Free, HND-WiFi or Free Tokyo WiFi aren’t on the airport’s page.

Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.

A 5-step check at Haneda

  1. Join exactly HANEDA-FREE-WIFI — not a similar name, and not one that appeared after you arrived at the gate.
  2. Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
  3. Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
  4. Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
  5. Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
