Rent is the biggest monthly cost for most renters, and it never feels like a purchase. Here is the median rent measured in hours of every month.

The price

Apartment List's national median rent was $1,388 a month in September 2026. Rents vary a lot by city, so type in your own.

$1,388 in hours of work, every month

A full-time month is about 173 hours. At $24 an hour, the median rent takes about a third of them: roughly all of Monday and half of Tuesday, every week.

A monthly cost weighs more

A one-off purchase is paid once. Rent is paid every month, so even a small difference compounds: $150 a month less is $1,800 a year, about 75 hours of work at $24.

Nina takes home $22 an hour. Her $1,600 rent is about 73 hours a month. Moving to a $1,350 place saves about 11 hours of work every month, which she sets up as an automatic investment.

Questions people ask

What is the average rent in the US?

Apartment List puts the national median at $1,388 a month in September 2026. Other trackers that measure differently report higher figures.

How many hours of work is my rent?

Divide your rent by your take-home hourly pay. $1,388 at $24 an hour is about 58 hours a month.

How much of my income should go to rent?

A common guideline is around 30% of gross income. Seeing rent in hours shows the same thing in time.

Does lower rent help me retire earlier?

Yes, if you invest the difference. A lower monthly cost both adds to savings and lowers the amount you need to stop working.
