The price of one pack is easy to shrug off. A year of them, and what that money could have become, is a different number.

The yearly number

Pack price × packs a day × 365. Prices vary hugely by place, so the estimate above uses your own price:

Half a pack a day halves it; two packs double it. In places with high tobacco taxes the yearly figure can pass $10,000.

Over a lifetime

Invested instead at 5% growth after inflation, $3,290 a year becomes about $109,000 in today's money after 20 years. At $15 a pack, about $181,000. Over 30 or 40 years the figure keeps growing quickly, because the early years compound the longest.

How much have I saved since I quit?

Multiply your old daily spend by the days since you stopped. Someone who smoked a $12 pack a day and quit a year ago has kept about $4,380. Many people who quit find it motivating to watch that number grow, and to move it somewhere it can earn.

Marcus smoked a pack a day at $12. Six months after quitting he has kept about $2,190. He puts the old daily amount into an index fund each month. If he keeps that up, in 20 years it could be around $145,000 in today's money, on top of what he gains in health.

The cost that is not money

This page is about money, but the larger costs are health and time. Free help to quit is available, for example from smokefree.gov in the US and the NHS in the UK. Untilfree is not a quit-smoking tool; it can show what the money you keep does for your freedom date.

For other everyday habits, see subscriptions per year and the latte factor.

Questions people ask

How much does a pack-a-day smoker spend in a year?

At $9 a pack, about $3,290. At $12, about $4,380. At $15, about $5,480. The price where you live gives your own figure.

What is the cost of smoking over a lifetime?

Spent over 40 years at $12 a pack, about $175,000 before any growth. Invested instead at 5% after inflation, the money could be worth far more, roughly half a million in today's money.

How much have I saved since I quit smoking?

Daily spend × days since you quit. A pack a day at $12, one year on, is about $4,380 kept.

What is the cost of cigarettes over the years?

Prices have risen faster than inflation in many places because of tax increases, so past years often cost less than today's price suggests.

Does Untilfree help me quit?

No. It is a freedom countdown, not a health app. It can show how money you keep moves your date.
