How Many Hours of Work Is a New Car?
A car is usually the biggest purchase after a home, and it is often paid monthly, which hides the total. Here is the average new car in working weeks.
The price
The average transaction price of a new vehicle in the US was $50,562 in September 2026, according to Kelley Blue Book (Cox Automotive). That is what buyers actually paid, after incentives.

$50,562 in hours of work
- $15 an hour take-home: about 84 working weeks.
- $20 an hour take-home: about 63 working weeks.
- $30 an hour take-home: about 42 working weeks.
- $45 an hour take-home: about 28 working weeks.
At $24 an hour, the average new car is about a year of full-time work, after tax. That is before insurance, fuel, repairs and interest.
The monthly payment is not the price
Experian puts the average new car payment at $765 a month. A payment that size is about 32 hours of work every month at $24, for the length of the loan. Seeing it as a share of every month makes it easier to judge than the sticker.
- Loan interest adds to the total: a longer loan means a lower payment but more paid overall.
- Running costs: insurance, fuel and maintenance are monthly too.
- Used is often cheaper: see the used car in hours.
