How your freedom day is worked out
- Your target is your FIRE number: yearly spending ÷ withdrawal rate. At 4% that is 25× what you spend in a year (see the 4% rule).
- Your path: what you have now plus what you save each month, grown month by month at your return after inflation — the same math as our FIRE calculator.
- Your date is the day that balance reaches the target, counted from today. The day count is the number of calendar days in between.
Sam has $50,000 saved, spends $3,300 and saves $1,500 a month. At a 4% withdrawal rate Sam needs about $990,000. At 5% growth after inflation Sam’s freedom day is roughly 24 years away — about 8,800 days. Saving $300 more a month pulls it in by more than two years.
Three ways to bring the date closer
Spend less: every $100 a month you stop spending lowers your target by $30,000 at 4% and adds $100 to your saving. Save a raise instead of spending it: see how your savings rate sets the years. And keep the return honest — test 3% so a bad decade does not surprise you. For a calendar-based count, see the retirement countdown.
Questions people ask
What is a freedom day?
It is the day your invested savings could pay all your bills for good. In FIRE terms it is the day you reach your FIRE number: your yearly spending divided by a safe withdrawal rate, usually 4%.
How is my freedom day calculated?
Your FIRE number is your yearly spending divided by the withdrawal rate. Starting from what you have saved, the calculator adds your monthly saving and grows the balance month by month at your return after inflation. The day the balance reaches your FIRE number is your freedom day.
Why does my date move so much when I change the numbers?
Monthly spending changes both how much you need and, often, how much you can save, so it moves the date twice. Return also matters: a lower return pushes the date out by years. Try a cautious 3% to see the late end of the range.
Is the date exact?
No. Markets never grow in a straight line, and the date is in today’s money without taxes, fees or state pensions. Treat it as a planning target that you check again every few months.
Can I count down to my freedom day?
Yes. Untilfree, on the App Store and Google Play, turns the same four numbers into a countdown that updates every night, with cautious, likely and optimistic dates.
