How Much Money to Retire at 50?
Fifty is a popular target because the money lasts fewer years than at 40 and account rules are closer. The answer still comes down to what you spend.
A 40-year retirement
Stopping at 50 means the money may need to last 40 years or more. Many people still start from 4% at this age, and some shave it a little for room; the FIRE number guide has the background.
Maya is 35, has $80,000 and spends $4,000 a month. To stop at 50 at 4%, she needs a pot of about $1.2 million and must invest roughly $4,000 a month for fifteen years, assuming 5% growth after inflation. At a more careful rate, the pot and monthly amount both go up.
What each pot pays at 50
- $300,000 pays about $12,000 a year at 4%. That covers a very lean life in a cheap place, and for most people it is not enough at 50.
- $1 million pays about $40,000 a year at 4%, or $35,000 at 3.5%.
- $2 million pays about $80,000 at 4%.
- $3 million pays about $120,000 at 4%, which fits a comfortable household.
So "can I retire at 50 with $300K" has a plain answer: only if your spending is very small, or you keep some work income. Compare it with how long $500,000 lasts and how long $1 million lasts.
The years before 59½ and 65
From 50, there are 9½ years before most US retirement accounts open without a penalty, and 15 until Medicare. What is different from age 40 is the rule of 55: it lets you take money from the 401(k) of the employer you leave in or after the year you turn 55. That is five years away, and it covers only that one employer's plan, not an IRA or an old job's account. For the full list of ways to bridge the gap, see retire at 40. Rules differ by country, and Untilfree does not model taxes or account types.
Social Security
It can start at 62, reduced, 12 years after 50. Untilfree leaves it out and counts only savings, so any benefit would be extra.
What helps most at 50
- Lower spending shrinks the pot you need, which often does more than chasing returns.
- Many people clear their biggest fixed costs, such as a mortgage, before stopping.
- Some hold a cash cushion for the first two or three years, so a market drop does not force sales.
If you are a few years short, the early retirement guide covers stopping a little later or working part-time. In Untilfree, "What if" shows how spending $300 less a month moves your date (unlimited for the first 3 days, then 3 a day free; unlimited with Plus).
Questions people ask
Can I retire at 50 with 300k?
Only with very low spending or some income. At 4%, $300,000 pays about $12,000 a year. Few people can live on that alone, so most would need part-time work, a paid-off home, or a later date.
Can I retire at 50 with 1 million?
It can work if you spend around $35,000 to $40,000 a year or less. Health cover before Medicare and a market slump early on are the main risks to plan for.
Is 2 million enough to retire at 50?
For many households, yes. At 4% it pays about $80,000 a year, and a little less at a more careful rate. It depends on your spending, where you live and your health costs.
Is 3 million enough to retire at 50?
Often it is comfortable. About $120,000 a year at 4% suits a larger household or a higher-cost city. A long retirement is the main reason to keep some margin.
How much do I need to retire at 50 and spend $5,000 a month?
Yearly spending of $60,000 points to around $1.5 million at 4%, and more at a lower rate. Use the calculator at the top to see how your own figures change it.
