Start from what you have and work forward: a portfolio paying a 3.5% yield makes about $1,460 a month on $500,000. Here is how that looks at four sizes.

The idea in one line

Dividend income is your portfolio's value times its yield. The yield is the share paid out as cash each year. Yields differ a lot by what you hold, so the figures below use three plain levels: 3%, 3.5% and 4%. All are before tax and rounded.

$100,000 portfolio

A yearly payout of about $3,000 to $4,000, or roughly $250 to $330 a month. Not a salary, but real: it can cover a phone plan, internet and a streaming bill or two. If this is where you are now, the first job is growth, and getting to the first $100K is the hardest part.

$500,000 portfolio

About $15,000 to $20,000 a year, or $1,250 to $1,670 a month. At 3.5% it is about $1,460. That covers a lean budget in a low-cost place, or a good share of a bigger one. For how long a pot this size lasts if you spend it down instead, see how long $500K lasts.

$1 million portfolio

About $30,000 to $40,000 a year, or $2,500 to $3,330 a month. At 3.5% it is $35,000, or about $2,920 a month. That is a modest but livable income in many parts of the US. Spending more than this means either drawing on growth too or accepting a longer wait. The page on how long $1 million lasts looks at that trade.

$2 million portfolio

About $60,000 to $80,000 a year, or $5,000 to $6,670 a month. At 3.5% it is $70,000, around $5,830 a month. Enough for a comfortable life for many households, though costs for housing and healthcare can eat into it fast in expensive cities.

A worked example

Elena has $500,000 invested and spends $2,400 a month. At a 3.5% yield, her portfolio pays about $1,460 a month. That is not all of her spending, but it covers her rent, utilities and phone. Those bills are paid for, forever. She keeps working for the rest.

If her yield drops to 3%, the payout falls to about $1,250 a month, and the utilities are the only bill she can count on. A small change in yield moves the picture more than people expect.

Questions people ask

How much dividend income will $500,000 generate?

At a 3.5% yield, about $17,500 a year or roughly $1,460 a month, before tax. At 3% it is $15,000 and at 4% $20,000. Real yields vary by what you hold and change from year to year.

How much dividend income can I get from $100,000?

Roughly $3,000 to $4,000 a year, or about $250 to $330 a month at yields of 3% to 4%. Enough to cover a few small bills, not a full living, so growth still matters most at this stage.

How much income does $1 million in dividends give?

About $30,000 to $40,000 a year at 3% to 4%, which is $2,500 to $3,330 a month before tax. Whether that is enough depends on where you live and what you spend.

How much dividend income do I get from $2 million?

Around $60,000 to $80,000 a year, or $5,000 to $6,670 a month at 3% to 4%, before tax. Taxes, healthcare and housing costs decide how far that goes.

Can I live on dividends alone?

Some people do, once the portfolio is large enough that the payout covers their spending. It takes a long time, dividends can be cut, and tax varies, so many keep a buffer.
