Hospital WiFi
Is hospital WiFi safe?
Hospitals usually run a separate guest network for patients and visitors. It’s public WiFi in a building where people often need to log in to sensitive things.
Hospital guest WiFi is generally fine for browsing, video calls and messaging over HTTPS. It is a public network shared with other patients and visitors, usually with a sign-in page and content filtering. Use the network name the hospital posts, and for patient portals or banking use the official app over a network you’ve checked, or mobile data.
What to know about hospital guest WiFi
- Separate from clinical systems. Guest networks are for patients and visitors; ask staff or look for posted signs for the exact name.
- Often filtered. Some sites or streaming services may be blocked. Filtering is not encryption.
- Shared and busy. Many people in waiting areas use it, and lookalike names are easy to create.
Patient portals and telehealth
- Use the provider’s official app or type the portal address yourself; don’t follow links in texts.
- Check the network before logging in, or use mobile data.
- Use headphones for telehealth calls in shared rooms; the bigger privacy risk is people nearby, not the WiFi.
The 5-step check
- Confirm the exact network name with staff, a sign or the venue’s website. Similar names are not the same network.
- Complete any sign-in page only if its address belongs to the venue or its WiFi provider. Never type a card number for “free” WiFi.
- Check the network: sign-in finished, DNS answers match trusted DNS, certificates valid, no unexpected proxy.
- Use apps and HTTPS sites. Stop if a site you know shows a certificate warning.
- Turn off Auto-Join for networks you won’t use again.
Frequently asked questions
Can the hospital see what I do on its WiFi?
Like any network owner, it can see which sites and services you connect to, but not the content of HTTPS pages and encrypted apps.
Is hospital WiFi safe for online banking?
Banking apps encrypt their traffic, but guest WiFi is public. Check the network first or use mobile data.
Why are some sites blocked on hospital WiFi?
Many guest networks filter content. That’s a policy choice by the hospital, not a sign of a problem.
