Can someone see what I do on public WiFi?
The short answer depends on who “someone” is: the network owner sees more than the person at the next table, and neither sees what’s inside encrypted apps.
Partly. On public WiFi the network operator can see which devices connect, which sites and services you reach (through DNS lookups and server names) and how much data you use, but not the content of HTTPS pages and encrypted apps: not your messages, passwords or the pages you read. Other people on the hotspot see even less. A VPN or mobile data hides the site list from the venue.
What the WiFi network can see
| Visible | Your device’s WiFi address (randomized on new networks by iPhone and Android) · which sites and services you connect to · when and how much data |
|---|---|
| Visible if unencrypted | Everything on plain http pages and in apps that don’t encrypt |
| Not visible with HTTPS | Page contents · what you type · messages · passwords · which page on a site you read |
What changes the picture
- Encrypted DNS. Android’s Private DNS can hide your lookups from the network when the network allows it; it only covers DNS, not everything.
- VPN. The network sees one encrypted connection to the VPN server; the VPN provider sees what the network would have seen.
- iCloud Private Relay (iCloud+) hides the sites you visit in Safari from the network.
- Mobile data. The venue sees nothing; your mobile operator sees connection metadata instead.
Practical steps
- Use HTTPS sites and trusted apps; avoid typing anything on http pages.
- Keep Private DNS on Automatic on Android, and private WiFi addresses on (default on both systems).
- Use a VPN or mobile data for things you’d rather the venue didn’t see.
- Check the network for a proxy or DNS redirection before sensitive logins.
Frequently asked questions
Can the WiFi owner see my history?
They can see which sites and services you connect to, but not the pages you read or what you type on HTTPS sites. Incognito mode doesn’t change what the network sees.
Can people on the same WiFi see my screen or messages?
No. They can’t see your screen, and encrypted messages and HTTPS pages aren’t readable to them.
Does incognito mode hide me on public WiFi?
No. Incognito only stops your browser saving history on your device. The network sees the same as without it.
