Bus WiFi
Is bus WiFi safe?
Intercity buses such as FlixBus, Greyhound and National Express often advertise free WiFi. It works much like train WiFi: a mobile router shared by everyone on board.
Bus WiFi is fine for light browsing and messaging over HTTPS. It’s an open, shared network running on mobile signal, often with a sign-in page and data limits, and on a bus it’s easy for someone nearby to broadcast a lookalike name. Join the name the operator shows on board, check the network, and keep banking and work logins for mobile data.
How bus WiFi works
- A router on the bus connects to mobile networks and shares that link over WiFi.
- Everyone on board shares it, usually without a password, sometimes with a sign-in page or per-device data cap.
- Coverage drops between towns and in rural areas, which can interrupt VPNs and uploads.
On board
- Look for the network name on signs or the booking confirmation; ignore similar names.
- Download anything big before you travel.
- Use mobile data for banking, payments and work logins.

The 5-step check
- Confirm the exact network name with staff, a sign or the venue’s website. Similar names are not the same network.
- Complete any sign-in page only if its address belongs to the venue or its WiFi provider. Never type a card number for “free” WiFi.
- Check the network: sign-in finished, DNS answers match trusted DNS, certificates valid, no unexpected proxy.
- Use apps and HTTPS sites. Stop if a site you know shows a certificate warning.
- Turn off Auto-Join for networks you won’t use again.
Frequently asked questions
Is FlixBus WiFi safe?
It’s a shared public network like other onboard WiFi. Use it for browsing over HTTPS, join the name shown on board, and use mobile data for banking.
Why does bus WiFi keep disconnecting?
The bus relies on mobile signal along the route; when coverage drops, so does the WiFi.
Can I use a VPN on bus WiFi?
Usually, though unstable coverage can make it drop. Operators may restrict some uses; check their terms.
