Hotel WiFi · Banking

Is hotel WiFi safe for online banking?

Hotel WiFi is shared with every guest on your floor, often runs through a sign-in page, and often answers DNS lookups itself. Here is how to bank safely anyway.

Short answer

Your bank’s app is usually safe to use on hotel WiFi because it encrypts its own traffic, but hotel networks add risks: many guests share them, fake hotel networks are easy to set up, and many intercept DNS for their sign-in page. The safer default is mobile data for banking; if you use the hotel WiFi, join the name from reception and check the network first.

What makes hotel WiFi different

A safe banking routine at a hotel

  1. Use mobile data for banking and payments if you have it, including a travel eSIM.
  2. Otherwise ask reception for the exact network name and join only that.
  3. Sign in on the portal: room number and name are normal; card number or bank login are not.
  4. Check the network after signing in: DNS answers, certificates, proxy.
  5. Open your bank’s app yourself and stop on any certificate warning.
  6. Forget the network at check-out.

Paid “premium” hotel WiFi

Paying for faster WiFi changes the speed, not the security. A premium tier on the same hotel network is shared in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to log in to my bank on hotel WiFi?

Through the bank’s official app, usually yes. Avoid following links, never ignore certificate warnings, and prefer mobile data if you have any doubt about the network.

Is hotel WiFi with a password more secure?

It encrypts the link to the router, but every guest has the same password. Treat it as shared, not private.

Should I use a VPN in a hotel?

Many employers require one, and it adds encryption across the network. Connect after the hotel sign-in page, since the portal must load first.
