Campus WiFi
Is school or university WiFi safe?
Campus networks are usually better run than café WiFi, with logins and monitoring. That makes them safer in some ways and less private in others.
Generally yes. School and university networks usually require a personal login (often via eduroam or a student account), which encrypts the WiFi link and makes them safer than open public WiFi. But the institution can see which sites and services you connect to, may filter content, and may require a certificate or profile to join. Install only what your IT department publishes, and use mobile data for things you’d rather keep private.
What campus networks are like
- Personal logins. Enterprise WiFi (WPA2/WPA3-Enterprise) uses your own username, so each person’s link is encrypted separately.
- Monitoring and filtering. Schools often log which sites devices visit and block some categories. They can’t read HTTPS content unless a device has a school-installed certificate.
- Guest networks. Open “guest” or “visitor” networks on campus are public WiFi; treat them that way.
Watch out for
- Fake campus networks asking for your student password on a web page. Real enterprise WiFi asks for it in the phone’s own WiFi login, not a web form.
- Instructions to install a profile or certificate that don’t come from your IT department’s official site.
The 5-step check
- Confirm the exact network name with staff, a sign or the venue’s website. Similar names are not the same network.
- Complete any sign-in page only if its address belongs to the venue or its WiFi provider. Never type a card number for “free” WiFi.
- Check the network: sign-in finished, DNS answers match trusted DNS, certificates valid, no unexpected proxy.
- Use apps and HTTPS sites. Stop if a site you know shows a certificate warning.
- Turn off Auto-Join for networks you won’t use again.
Frequently asked questions
Can my school see my history on its WiFi?
It can usually see which sites and services you connect to, not the content of HTTPS pages, unless your device has a school-installed certificate or monitoring software (common on school-issued devices).
Is eduroam safe?
eduroam uses enterprise WiFi with personal logins, which is safer than open WiFi. Make sure you set it up with your institution’s official instructions.
Is using a VPN on school WiFi allowed?
Policies vary; some schools block or forbid VPNs. Check your school’s acceptable use policy.
