$34,200 in hours of work

For a couple who both take home $24 an hour, that is about 18 working weeks each.

The guest list is the big lever

At about $292 per guest, every guest is roughly 12 hours of work at $24. Cutting 20 guests saves about $5,800, around six working weeks for one earner. Venue, food and drink scale with the number of people; the dress and rings do not.

Priya and Ben take home $26 and $23 an hour. Their first plan, $38,000, is about 19 working weeks each. They cut the guest list from 130 to 95 and save about $10,000, five weeks each, which they put toward a home deposit instead.
