The prices
Sony raised PS5 prices in the US on 2 April 2026: $649.99 for the standard PS5, $599.99 for the Digital Edition and $899.99 for the PS5 Pro.

The standard PS5 in hours of work
- $15 an hour take-home: about 43 hours.
- $20 an hour take-home: about 32 hours.
- $30 an hour take-home: about 22 hours.
- $45 an hour take-home: about 14 hours.
At $24 an hour, the Digital Edition is about 25 hours and the PS5 Pro about 37 hours. The step up to the Pro costs about 10 more hours.
The console is only the start
Games, a second controller and an online subscription often cost more than the console over its life. Rockstar has set GTA 6 for 19 November 2026 but had not announced a price when we checked, so leave room for it rather than guessing.
- Count the first year: console + two or three games + online membership.
- Digital vs disc: the Digital Edition is $50 cheaper, but used and discounted disc games are not an option.
- Hours played: 300 hours of play from a $650 console is about $2 an hour of fun.
Jay takes home $20 an hour. A PS5 is about 32 hours of work, the Pro about 45. He expects to play mostly one game, so he picks the standard model and keeps the 13 hours he would have spent on the upgrade.
