It takes decades on a small monthly amount and about a decade on a large one. Before you chase the round number, check whether a million is even your number.

Years to $1 million, by monthly amount

These are rough examples in today's money. They assume your investments grow 5% a year after inflation, which is an assumption and never a promise.

Starting from zero:

A head start changes the picture. With $50,000 already saved, $1,000 a month gets there in about 30 years, $2,000 in about 21, and $4,000 in about 14.

The pattern is easy to see. Going from $1,000 to $3,000 a month cuts the wait nearly in half. Going from $3,000 to $5,000 cuts it by about a third. Each extra dollar helps, but a little less than the one before.

Alex is 30, has $50,000 and invests $2,000 a month. That plan reaches $1 million in about 21 years, at 51. If Alex finds $200 more a month, the date moves about a year closer. Small changes add up when they run for decades.

Why time beats timing

In the first decade most of the balance is your own deposits. In the last decade, growth does the heavy lifting and may add more in a year than you deposit. The long, quiet middle is where many people give up. Staying in, steadily, is the whole game. Our guide to saving the first $100K covers the slowest part.

Do you actually need $1 million?

This is the question most calculators skip. A million is a round number, not a magic one. The amount that would let you stop work is about 25 times your yearly spending, using the common 4% rule of thumb. If you spend $30,000 a year, your number is closer to $750,000. If you spend $60,000, it is closer to $1.5 million. For a retirement that could last 40 years or more, many people use a lower draw, which pushes the number up.

So the useful thing to chase is your own figure, based on your own bills. Our guide on how much money you need to never work again shows what moves it.

What if you reach it?

A million is not the same at every age. It may last for good at 65 and be thin at 40. Our guide on how long $1 million lasts works through that, and the retire early guide shows what changes when you stop before the traditional age.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to save $1 million?

From zero, $1,000 a month takes about 34 years, $3,000 a month about 18, and $5,000 a month about 12, assuming 5% growth after inflation. A starting balance and a higher growth rate shorten it.

How long does it take to become a millionaire on an average salary?

It can take 25 to 35 years if you invest steadily. The key is the share of pay you save, not the salary itself. Starting early and raising your savings as pay grows can bring it down a lot.

How much do I need to save per month to reach $1 million in 20 years?

Starting from $50,000 with 5% growth after inflation, about $2,100 a month gets there in roughly 20 years. Starting from zero you would need more.

Is $1 million enough to retire at 50?

It can be if your spending is modest, around $35,000 a year or less. The money may need to last 40 years or more, so many people use a lower draw. It depends on your bills, not the headline number.

Does saving $1 million take less time with a higher return?

Yes, but higher returns usually come with higher risk and bigger swings. Planning on a modest return after inflation is the safer way to avoid disappointment. Returns are never guaranteed.
