How Many Hours of Work Is a Year of College?
College is priced per year but paid over many, often with loans. Here is one year at a public university measured in working weeks.
The price
College Board's Trends in College Pricing 2025 puts tuition and fees at a public four-year college at $11,950 a year in-state for 2025–26. The full budget, with housing, food, books and transport, is $30,990. Out-of-state students budget $50,920; tuition at a private nonprofit averages $45,000.

$30,990 in hours of work
- $15 an hour take-home: about 52 working weeks.
- $20 an hour take-home: about 39 working weeks.
- $30 an hour take-home: about 26 working weeks.
- $45 an hour take-home: about 17 working weeks.
Tuition and fees alone, $11,950, is about 12 working weeks at $24 an hour. Four years of the full budget is roughly 129 working weeks, about two and a half years of take-home pay.
Sticker price vs what families pay
Grants and scholarships lower the price many students actually pay, so the published figure is a ceiling, not a bill. Loans move the cost into the future and add interest, which is where hours turn into years.
- Price per year, then four: the total is what you are deciding on.
- Net price calculators: each college has one, required by law.
- Loans: see how long student loans take to pay off.
A parent who takes home $30 an hour looks at the $30,990 in-state budget: about 26 working weeks a year. After a grant, the family's real cost is $18,000, about 15 weeks, and they plan a mix of savings and a small loan.
