How to check DNS servers on iPhone
DNS is the internet’s phone book: it turns names into addresses. Here is where your iPhone shows the DNS servers it’s using, and what it doesn’t show.
On WiFi, open Settings > Wi‑Fi, tap the ⓘ next to your network and scroll to Configure DNS; with “Automatic” selected, the servers the network gave you are listed there. iPhone doesn’t show DNS servers for mobile data, and a VPN, iCloud Private Relay or a DNS profile can override what’s listed. To see whether the network’s DNS answers are honest, you need to compare answers, not just read the server list.
Step by step (WiFi)
- Open Settings and tap Wi‑Fi.
- Tap the ⓘ button next to the network you’re connected to.
- Scroll down and tap Configure DNS.
- With Automatic selected, the DNS servers from the network are shown. Manual lets you set your own for this network.
What can change the real DNS path
- VPN apps usually send DNS through the VPN.
- iCloud Private Relay (iCloud+) handles DNS for Safari and some traffic; you can turn it off per network in the network’s ⓘ screen.
- DNS profiles or apps (encrypted DNS) installed in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
- The network itself may answer lookups meant for outside servers (DNS interception), common in hotels.
What DNS servers tell you
| Your router’s address (e.g. 192.168.x.x) | Normal on home and many public networks: the router passes lookups on. |
|---|---|
| Your internet or mobile provider | Normal; the default for most connections. |
| A public resolver (Cloudflare, Google, Quad9…) | Normal if you or the network chose it. |
| Something you don’t recognize on your home WiFi | Worth a closer look: changed DNS is a common sign of a tampered router. |
Which server is listed doesn’t tell you whether answers are honest. Comparing answers with a trusted resolver does; that’s what SentryFi’s DNS check does.
On mobile data
iPhone doesn’t display mobile DNS servers. SentryFi’s detailed report shows the DNS servers and provider it detects on WiFi, and on mobile data SentryFi Pro checks DNS answers too.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone show 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server?
That’s usually your router, which forwards lookups to your internet provider or a resolver set in the router. It’s normal.
How do I change DNS on iPhone?
Settings > Wi‑Fi > ⓘ > Configure DNS > Manual, then add servers. It applies only to that WiFi network.
Can I see DNS servers for cellular on iPhone?
Not in Settings. iOS doesn’t show mobile data DNS servers.
